Many people who start blogs do so with no intention of turning it into a business. And yet, if you are putting in the time, you ought to be getting more out of it than the singular joy of spending hours every day researching and writing (on your own time, no less). At the very least, you probably have a message that you would like to get out to a mass audience instead of just the three guys at the barbershop who religiously follow your posts (although you appreciate their devotion). The truth is, if you didn’t care about sharing your thoughts with others, you wouldn’t have started a blog in the first place. But how do you go about getting more traffic (and possibly turning your passion into a paying gig)? Luckily, there are several ways to get on track with increasing your readership
Guest post. There are probably plenty of high-ranking, related blogs that you read and admire. So if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! Find out if they accept guest posts and submit something so that you can, in effect, piggy-back on their success. They get free content, and you get a link back to your site. It’s a win-win for everyone. Just make sure you write something that is not only acceptable for their site, but that is attention-grabbing enough to get readers to sit up, take notice, and surf on over to your site.
Commenting. Another good way to garner interest in your site is to comment on other blogs. This can help you to start conversations with potential readers and reel them in to your site. Just be diligent about responding so you don’t lose their interest and keep your comments relevant and appropriate to avoid upsetting blog-owners.
SEO. Search engine optimization is a science centered on the ever-changing whims of Google. If you can stay on top of their morphing algorithms, you have a good chance of climbing in rank for key search words related to your site. And if you can manage to position yourself in the top five (or even on the first page) you can really boost your readership
Forums. If you have advice for others in your area of expertise, consider signing on with a forum. This is a great way to reach a lot of people who may be interested in your site while garnering some goodwill by lending a hand. Building a good public image is an old marketing tactic that has found new life on internet forums, so don’t hesitate to use it. Just avoid utilizing forums as a vehicle to spam people. Not only is it a turn-off for potential readers, it will also get you banned.
Word of mouth. Possibly the most important tool in your arsenal for getting more readers is the readership you already have. So keep them happy! Post often, but more importantly, post exceptional content that is both informative and entertaining. To that end, consider supplementing your own voice by adding interviews, guest posts, and reviews, as well as involving your readers with polls and give-aways. Engaged readers will share the wealth with their friends.
