People start blogs for many reasons. In most cases, they feel that they have something of value to share with their audience, in the form of information, analysis, opinion, or all of the above. They may want to use it as a means to connect with others who are like-minded. Or they may simply see it as a fun way to try to earn a little extra cash. Whatever the reason for starting a blog, one thing is certain: in order for the blog to succeed, it must draw in readership. And the only way to ascertain if your message is reaching people (aside from the counter on your front page) is to get some feedback and interact with those who are reading your blog. But how can you encourage people who are tired, busy, or even lazy to write in with comments and become true participants in the discussions you are starting?
Get niche. There are a mind-boggling number of blogs out there competing for readership, and yours is just one small voice amidst the cacophony. Part of creating a space that people want to join lies in making it personal and unique. So if you’re interests are in the arena of celebrity sightings, just keep in mind that TMZ and Perez Hilton are already doing it better than you. Since you can’t really compete, try giving your blog a spin to make it unique and offer some content that the blogosphere giants don’t have.
Target readers. You can’t keep an audience if they simply pass through without any real interest in your topics. To bring in the readers who are actually going to stick around, you need to make sure they can find you. So start by visiting, commenting, and posting links on related blogs to hook in readers with a built-in interest, then engage in SEO (search engine optimization) so that readers who are looking for what you have to offer can actually find you.
Get compelling content. Of course, once readers visit your blog, you’ll want to ensure that they return. To do this, you will need to provide content that is compelling and engaging. To that end, keep up-to-date with current trends and consider instituting some guest posts. Many of your readers probably have something to say, which not only invites them to join the discussion, but also introduces new voices and gives you a break in your busy blogging schedule.
Keep it simple. With great power comes great responsibility, and once your numbers start to climb, you’ll no doubt be tempted to add some advertising and affiliates to your site. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this as long as you do it the right way. Don’t allow pop-ups and flashy banners to interrupt your readers or you may risk losing them to competitors who put the blog material first.
Create an interactive space. If you want your readers to be fully engaged in the blog experience, then invite them to join in the fun. Encourage debate by posing questions that your readers can comment on, and then keep the discussion going by replying to everyone. You can also assign them tasks for their daily lives, encourage guest posts, and highlight real-world reader achievements. Contests and give-aways couldn’t hurt, either. The point is, making an effort to connect with your readers in a personal way is a lot more interesting than talking at them day in and day out.
