Top Five To-Do List Managers

Advances in technology may seem like a lot of work initially, especially if you’re not particularly tech-savvy, but many of them can make a big difference in your life, especially in the area of time-management.  And while you may be perfectly comfortable with your old pen-and-paper to-do lists, there is an easier, faster, and more progressive way to track your daily activities, keep a long-term calendar, manage projects for work, and run your household efficiently.  And with options both online and for your mobile devices, you can make your lists at home or at the office and take them with you wherever you go.  Here are a few options you may want to look at in order to take your listing capabilities to the next level.

  • Microsoft Outlook.  This program is most often used to arrange an office schedule (send, receive, and track email, plug in meetings and share project information, manage contacts, and set reminders).  But it can also be a useful tool in your everyday life to manage your time effectively and see that all of your tasks are completed.
  • Todoist.  Like Outlook, this is a web-based application, but its scope is a bit more refined as its main function is not mail, but planning and completing a schedule.  It’s simple to use, offers functionality for integrating third party apps, and features several keyboard shortcuts for quick usage.
  • Voo2do.  Like many web to-do list managers, this one has a free and a paid version.  What makes it worthwhile is not only the ability to create and edit lists, it also has features to set priority level, list due dates, and estimate completion time for each item.  It also has organizational capabilities and allows users to add tasks by email.
  • Todo for the iPhone or iPad. You CAN take it with you, at least if your “it” is a to-do list.  This handy app for your iDevice is set up with a clever interface that looks like your paper day-planner on speed.  Besides its many useful management properties (alerts, prioritization, search feature), this app allows you to sync up with your desktop or certain web programs with free downloads.
  • Dobot.  Another app for the iPhone, this program is free (Todo will cost you $9.99) and many claim it is the easiest to use.  The interface is extremely user-friendly (a “+” is all you need to hit in order to add a task) and offers only the bare bones features you really need (name, due date, priority, notes).  You can sort by any of these features to complete tasks by item, level of urgency, or due date, making it easy to get all of your tasks done in a timely manner.

If all else fails, you can always return to your old-school method of pen-and-paper lists to manage your life, but with the wide variety of programs available for your desktop, on the web, or on your favorite handheld device, you are bound to find one that meets your needs, your budget, and your level of technological comfort.
